SKILLED VISAS

General Skilled Migration Visas operate under the online system, SkillSelect. Under SkillSelect, a potential applicant for a ‘points test’ GSM visa will have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Department’s online service. You will receive an invitation to apply online only if you meet the eligibility criteria and you can only formally apply after receiving the invitation to apply. To make a valid application for the following visa subclasses you must meet the basic criteria including age, English language ability, qualifications and nominated occupation.

Visa subclasses in this category:

Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)

This is a permanent visa for independent applicants, whether applying onshore or offshore under Skill Select programme. You must meet the basic requirements and pass the points test with the specified score or

higher to make a valid application after receiving the invitation to apply. If you are eligible for this subclass, you are not required to be sponsored by a State/Territory government.

Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190)

This is a permanent visa. Applicants for this subclass must be nominated by a State/Territory government. You must meet the basic requirements and pass the points test with the specified score or higher to make a valid application after receiving the invitation to apply.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 489)

Individuals who are unable to meet the requirements of a permanent skilled visa may apply for this provisional visa subclass. To apply for this visa subclass, you must be nominated by a State/Territory government OR sponsored by an eligible Australian Relative living in a designated area. You must meet the basic requirements and pass the points test with the specified score or higher to make a valid application after receiving the invitation to apply. This visa is valid for up to 4 years and the visa holder will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent visa after living at least for 2 years and working for at least 1 year in a specified regional area of Australia.
